How do you play?
Switch on a blaster and a vest, pick teams, turn the lights off. Aim at the lit panel on another player's vest: lights and sound tell you when you've landed a hit, and the vest buzzes when you take one.
After that the house does the rest. Hallways work better than open living rooms, the sofa makes decent cover, and the stairs are always a bad idea.
If you want more than everyone against everyone, the Family Playbook that comes with your order has 22 game modes, from last team standing to defend the base.
Does it use a real laser?
No laser, and nothing is fired. The blaster sends a harmless infrared signal, the same kind your TV remote uses, and the vest picks it up. Nothing leaves the blaster that can hit anyone.
That also means no darts and no projectiles: nothing to tread on in the dark and nothing to find under the sofa three weeks later.
Made for ages 6 and up. Lightweight plastic, adjustable straps that fit over a jumper. As with any infrared toy, players aim at the vest rather than at faces, and younger children should have an adult nearby.
How many can play?
From two players up to six, and everyone plays in the same game: two against two with a 4-player set, three against three with a 6-player set, or everyone for themselves. Teams go by colour, so picking sides takes five seconds.
Ages 6 and up. In practice the six-year-old plays on a parent's team and the ten-year-old takes it far too seriously.
You don't need a big house. A hallway and two rooms is enough, and most families end up playing in the dark on the ground floor.
What batteries does it need?
Blaster: 2 AA each. Vest: 3 AA each. A 4-player set takes 20 AA batteries in total, and they aren't included, so add a multipack to the order.
There's no USB charging, and that's deliberate: no waiting for it to charge before a game and no cable to lose. Swap the batteries and you're playing again in a minute.
Pull the lever on the blaster to reload: each reload gives you 6 shots. After 6 hits a player is out, and you restart the vest for the next round.
